Hieroglyphic writing uses pictures. To represent a fish, a scribe would simply draw a fish. But hieroglyphics could also stand for a consonant: a drawing of a mouth, for example, also meant an 'R'. In this way hieroglyphs made up a kind of alphabet, but with mostly consonants.
